I fear I am quite well informed. You missed my point. I was complaining that we, as Atari users, always seem to be resorting to various programs to correct problems and shortcomings in our machines. If atari regularly released TOS updates on disk, we wouldn't need: Quick ST Gemini NeoDesk Pinhead Little Green Selector MaxiFile and on and on and on. Subject: Converting GIF to PI3 To: info-atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu RE: a question on converting GIFs to PI3 in IA16 Digest #028 I've used the following solution for quick and easy conversion for the past few years. First pick up "p_or_s_2.lzh" and "giffer.arc" at atari.archive. "p_or_s_2.lzh" is print-or-save, an AUTO program that allows you to send the Desktop's ALT-HELP print screen routine either to your printer or to a Degas PI? file. "giffer.arc" is a monochrome-only GIF picture viewer that is quick and has good dithering capabilities. After booting up (and configuring) p_or_s, run giffer and show your picture, then hit ALT-RSHT-HELP to send the screen to a PI3 file in the directory of your choice. Piece 'o cake. BTW, I wrote a little GEM shell to make giffer a little more friendly. Send me mail if you are interested in a copy. BTW2, this is an excellent solution for generating picture files for use as Desktop backgrounds in Quick-ST. My favorites are SPACEWLK.GIF and SR71.GIF (even if I only have a lowly 68k-8, not an SST;). ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // Jeff Vincent / ASTRE // ASTRE = Competition Rocketry // // astre@halfog.asrc.albany.edu // Publisher of STAR-DATE // //------------------------------------------------------------------// // Gummi Bears! The TT is so different in its hardware and chipset compared to an ordinary ST, that a soft emulator had to be totally rewritten. If I started counting all applications which don't run on the TT, I would never dare to try PC Ditto. Ont the other hand, with the increase of performance (about five times) it could be an interesting project for the developers of PC Ditto to make a TT version, using its 68030/68882 features. Nevertheless, Fast RAM would surely be _very_ problematic to supply for DOS usage. My personal opinion is: I bought a TT because I hate BIM-compatibles with their lousy OS, therefore I _never_ wanted to run DOS on my TT :-) Regards, Markus. -- * /dev/ Markus Wenzel, University of Stuttgart * * /usr/spool/mail/ wenzel@marsu.tynet.sub.org / @rus.uni-stuttgart.de * * /bin/ps -l TT admin on rusmv1.rus.uni-stuttgart.de * * /irc/nick Marsu * * /etc/motd >> Luck is believing you're lucky. << * ------------------------------ Date: 2 Feb 92 03:03:34 GMT From: mcsun!news.funet.fi!sunic!chalmers.se!dtek.chalmers.se!d9fors@uunet.uu.net (Patrick Forsberg) Subject: Postscript on Atari's in general To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu In article bart@dutncp8.tn.tudelft.nl (Bart Schipper) writes: >I wonder why why why you need an interceptor to convert Calamus >output for 300dpi laserprinters to a postscript file, since the creators >of Calamus provide drivers for every printer you can think of. I am anything but a hardware guru, but I offer the following explanation (and no fix). The sm124 uses a flyback transformer which bootstraps off of the screen current. In simpler terms, the flyback transformer needs to have some return current from the screen in order to work correctly. When the screen is almost black, as with a screen saver, this return current is significantly diminished. This feeds back into the electronics and the electron gun reacts by emitting less current, dimming the screen. This is of course probably totally incorrect.
